ZF 8HP — Supported Variants
The ZF 8HP family is currently the most mature platform supported by IOcan. These transmissions are widely used in BMW and other OEM applications and rely heavily on CAN communication with the vehicle. IOcan keeps the factory TCU (mechatronics) in place and provides the protocol emulation and signal translation required for standalone operation.
Supported units
ZF 8HP45 / 8HP50 / 8HP70 / 8HP90 and related variants as fitted to BMW F-series and G-series vehicles, plus Alpina calibrations.
The transmission generation is selected by the transmission-emulation CAN preset paired in the configuration:
| Platform | PT-CAN preset | PT-CAN2 preset |
|---|---|---|
| F-series 8HP, Gen 1 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN Fxx Gen1 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN2 Fxx Gen1 |
| F-series 8HP, Gen 2 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN Fxx Gen2 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN2 Fxx Gen2 |
| G-series 8HP, Gen 2 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN Gxx Gen2 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN2 Gxx Gen2 |
| G-series 8HP, Gen 3 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN Gxx Gen3 | BMW 8HP PT_CAN2 Gxx Gen3 |
See Configuration for how the preset pairs with the 8HP OEM Gateway controller.
Supported capabilities
- standalone transmission operation with the factory TCU and OEM shift quality
- integration with standalone / aftermarket ECUs
- paddle shifter and sequential shifter control
- OEM gear selector (GWS) support
- diagnostic access to the transmission control unit
- reading diagnostic trouble codes
- monitoring adaptation values
- flashing OEM 8HP TCUs with custom firmware and reading TCU memory
Compatibility notes
Transmission compatibility depends on several factors:
- transmission hardware version
- TCU firmware version
- vehicle platform the transmission originated from
- available CAN communication signals
Some transmissions may require custom configuration or firmware support. Always verify compatibility before beginning a project.
