BMW F30 — Chassis Integration

This guide covers connecting the PT_CAN, PT_CAN2, power, fan control, and accelerator pedal signals between a BMW F30 chassis, IOcan, and a standalone ECU. The main connections are made at the A46*1B, X13*1B and Z8*3B connectors, whose full pinouts are in Connector pinouts at the end of this page.

This guide is based on the N20/N26 engine and DME. Connections for B46/B48 and B58 may be different.

Before you start, please familiarize yourself with the device pinout.

Fan control

  • Fan cut-out relay — pin 4 on A46*1B, should be controlled by the ECU.
  • Fan PWM signal — pin 18 on A46*1B, should also be controlled by the ECU (7% standby, 11–93% fan active).

Accelerator pedal

The accelerator pedal should be connected to the ECU, or to the analog inputs on IOcan if you want to send throttle position over the CAN bus.

X13*1B connector

  • Pins 1 and 11 — AC compressor control (PWM and clutch). Both are controlled by the FEM (Front Electronic Module); it is recommended to use the original BMW AC compressor.
  • Pin 9 — starter control (KL50L). Capable of driving a 2JZ starter, also controlled by the FEM.

Z8*3B connector

  • Pin 3 — KL31 (ground) for IOcan.
  • Pin 1 — KL15 (ignition supply), used to control the main relay for the standalone ECU.

The PWM control signal runs at 7 % for standby and 11–93 % with the fan active.

Ethanol sensor

The sensor encodes two values on one PWM line:

  • Ethanol content — frequencies between 50 and 150 Hz correspond to 0 to 100 % ethanol. Frequencies between 170 and 190 Hz are reserved for sensor faults.
  • Fuel temperature — transmitted as the duration of the low pulse. A 1 ms pulse is −40 °C (−40 °F); a 5 ms pulse is 125 °C (257 °F).

Notes

  • Ensure that all connections are securely made and wires are properly insulated.
  • For CAN signals, use twisted pairs to minimize electromagnetic interference.
  • Double-check all connections to prevent any miswiring that could damage components or cause malfunction.
