8HP, DKG or PDK?
Which gearbox to build around. The honest short answer: for most builds the ZF 8HP is the safe choice, and the interesting question is whether your build is one of the exceptions.
The architectural difference that decides most of it
The 8HP has a torque converter. DKG and PDK have clutches. Almost everything downstream follows from that.

The converter is the reason the 8HP is easier to live with. It absorbs driveline shock, it creeps in traffic, and it tolerates a launch you did not calibrate for. A dual clutch does none of those things for free — take-up is a calibration you own, and getting it wrong wears a clutch rather than just feeling poor.
Support maturity — the part we can state definitively
This is the factor most likely to affect your build, and the one we know exactly:

By build type
Road, restomod, daily. The 8HP, comfortably. Creep, smooth take-up, eight ratios and the most mature support. A dual clutch in traffic is a calibration project you did not ask for.
Drag. Both work and the choice is about what you already have. The dual clutches shift faster; the 8HP's converter multiplies torque off the line and tolerates repeated launches without the clutch wear. Whichever you pick, the torque signal has to be right — this is the application where an under-reporting estimate destroys clutches fastest.
Track and road racing. Dual clutch if you want the shift speed and are prepared to calibrate take-up properly. The 8HP if you would rather spend that time elsewhere.
Drift. The clutch behaviour matters more than the shift speed. This is a harder call than the others and depends heavily on how the car is driven.
Rally. Parts availability, serviceability and tolerance of abuse tend to decide it rather than shift speed.
What is the same whichever you choose
Do not let this get lost in the comparison — it is where the work actually is:
- The mandatory signal set is nearly identical. Vehicle speed is mandatory on PDK and not on 8HP; otherwise the same seven or eight inputs.
- Engine torque has to be right on all three, and matters more on a dual clutch, where the consequence of getting it wrong is clutch wear rather than a harsh shift.
- Brake is missing from almost every ECU stream and needs a device input.
- Shift points are in the transmission's tune on all three, not in the device.

- Which device do I need? — gateway or standalone.
- Stated limitations — before buying, not after.
- Aftermarket ECU integration — what your ECU can supply.
